Interesting Gemsbok Hunting Information:

  • Gemsbok are large antelope of the Oryx species that are accustomed to the harshest desert regions of Africa, capable of surviving in waterless wastelands where many animals would perish.
  • Gemsbok are powerfully built and known for their striking coloration with a mask-like face, and long, horse-like tail.
  • A female will hide her calf 3-6 weeks remaining nearby to nurse.  The calf’s pale brown color works as camouflage and will not develop its striking black-and-white face markings until it is ready to join the herd with its mother.
  • Gemsbok of both sexes have horns which are used as defensive weapons against predators even killing lions in their native lands.  A female will typically have a longer/narrower set of horns.
  • Gestation: 9 months and can have twins.
  • Lifespan: 18-20 years
